rear extension creates flexible living

The living area in this 20th-century family home worked adequately day to day but was restrictive for large gatherings. The spacious garden was disconnected from the home and underused as a result.

A simple single-storey rear extension and strategic internal reconfiguration create a flexible space that both welcomes large get-togethers and cultivates quiet days for two. The family can now also enjoy their garden from within, even when the weather doesn't encourage being outside.

A simple 2.25m deep, full-width rear extension for the living area enabled us to work within Permitted Development legislation; meaning Planning Permission was not required. A bespoke kitchen, careful attention to lighting, and expansive high-performance slim frame doors to the garden create a bright, comfortable and adaptable space. Cooking, eating and living areas are distinct but linked, making it easy to cook and host at the same time. While the actual extension is modest, the strong connection to the garden and the reconsidered interior make for a dramatic transformation.
