Conversion of Crugnant Barn, Llanbrynmair, West Wales
Conversion of an existing 120 year old derelict stone barn to provide a home for five members of the client’s immediate family and for ageing members of the extended family. The clients also have a disabled son, so the building was designed specifically with the less mobile in mind. The client’s philosophy is to make as small an impact as possible, necessitating the use of local hand-crafted materials and eco-friendly features wherever possible.
• Hemp and lime insulation to existing stone walls which provide excellent thermal mass
• Composting toilets by means of ‘Aquatron’
• Oak members for timber frame cut from adjacent woodland (trees rescued from chipping)
• Recycled and reclaimed building materials, including local roof slates, timber joists and floor boards
• Grey water recycling
