brighton & hove

living with Light and Sound

This carefully considered extension and internal reconfiguration in Hove transforms a modest end-terrace house into a brighter, more adaptable home, centred around music, gathering, and everyday living. The project introduces a compact side extension and a reworked ground floor layout, creating a dedicated Piano Room alongside an expanded Kitchen/Dining space enriched with natural light.

Developed in close collaboration with the clients, the design responds to the constraints of the existing footprint while enhancing spatial flow and visual connectivity.

Ground Floor Transformation

Given the compact proportions of the original house, maintaining a sense of openness was key. The new Piano Room is positioned to the side of the plan, defined yet visually connected to the main living areas. Large glazed doors and an internal window create transparency between spaces, but when required, these elements can be closed to provide acoustic separation, supporting both performance and quiet retreat.

The Kitchen/Dining area has been reimagined as the social heart of the home. The side extension increases usable floor area while a glazed roof with timber details above introduces additional daylight deep into the plan. This overhead light enhances the sense of volume and creates a bright, uplifting atmosphere throughout the day. The result is a cohesive, open environment that supports cooking, dining, and informal gathering with ease.

Light and Connection

Natural light plays a defining role in the project. The combination of vertical glazing and rooflight draws daylight into the centre of the home, reducing reliance on artificial lighting and enhancing the overall spatial experience.
